FAST GROWING ECONOMY - Dominican Republic

The Dominican Republic’s economy has been the fastest growing in the Americas. The country enjoyed growth rates of 7% per year in 2014 and again in 2015 and is on track for that or better this year, thanks largely to millions of tourism dollars from North American and European travelers flocking to those sandy beaches I mentioned in growing numbers.

Alongside economic growth, the country’s recently re-elected President Danilo Medina has made education a priority, sponsoring literacy and vocational training programs for adults and building 2,500 new schools during his four years in office so far.

PUNTA CANA IS ON FIRE !

The country’s infrastructure changed drastically. Today new highways connect most of the resort and beach areas. The colonial zone in Santo Domingo is enjoying a facelift. New roads and sidewalks are being built, and utility cables are being buried underground.

More flights from the United States make the island more accessible, and major international hotel chains are targeting the DR, specifically Santo Domingo, for new properties.

Meantime, Carnival is bringing a ship a day to Santo Domingo’s cruise dock.

The DR sees about 7 million tourists per year; about 60% of these are from North America. President Danilo’s administration is trying to attract more Chinese tourists and has also targeted Israel with success. Cruise ship & Charters arrive 4 days a week to CapCana Marina.

Mitur seeks to regenerate 13 beaches in the DR for $100 million US dollars

December 02, 2017

The main beaches of the country have deteriorated to such a degree that if they do not intervene, the tourist industry will be significantly affected. Given this, it is necessary to intervene in order to preserve and/or improve its natural conditions that make it a tourist attraction, which would allow maintaining the level of competition in the sun and beach market. This has been established by the Ministry of Tourism (Mitur) office that called a tender for the regeneration of 13 beaches in five provinces.

The Government will have a financing of $100 million US dollars, for the regeneration of the beaches. *dominican-republic-live source

Dominican Republic 2017 exports on track to US$10.0B+

Santo Domingo.- Exports in 2017 are on track to exceed US$10.0 billion, Dominican Exporters Association (Adoexpo) president Álvaro Sousa Sevilla affirmed Wed.

“Tentatively, we’re surmising the data until October, the unofficial data and to October we’re close to 10% above last year. Everything points to exceeding for the first time, US$10.0 billion in the Dominican Republic in terms of exports, that is; we’re growing,” the business leader said.

“We’re surpassing this barrier which for many years we have been saying that it’s like the ceiling we couldn’t reach and we’re already doing so. We’re going to surpass US$10.0 billion,” he said at a gala on Tues.

Sousa added that next year’s expectation is that 2018 will be named “The National Year of export promotion and from there we’ll continue working with plans like the ones being worked on now is the ‘Caribbean Table,’ and that it becomes reciprocal to other destinations to diversify exports with the clear objective of generating more foreign exchange and jobs. Exports in 2016 were US$9.7 billion.”
